Nursing Assistant Questions and Answers

I would like to know if I can recertify my CNA license. I would like to know the costs in doing this. I am interested in recertifying, so I can begin working as a CNA again.
To be on the safe side it is best to call the Nurse Aide Registry for your state and ask what you should do. They are the ultimate authority when it comes to CNA certifications since they issue them. I think that if you have an expired (or inactive) CNA license you must first check how long has been since your certification expired. If your nursing assistant certification has expired you most likely have to retake and pass the CNA exam although some states require retraining as well. Federal regulation requires that an individual work at least eight hours, for pay, in the provision of nursing services without a two year break to remain active. Please note that renewal requirements may differ from state to state and may change over time and that some states make a distinction between inactive and expired CNA licenses. Locate the contact information for the CNA registry of your state and contact them for up-to-date and accurate information regarding these requirements. You might have to retake and pass the CNA exam but once you do your certification is valid and active once again. For some individuals the only way to become recertified is to repeat the entire process of training followed by the competency examination. If you are in this situation and wish to work as a certified nursing assistant, then you need to attend a new CNA course and pass the CNA state exam. North Carolina and Florida allow you to challenge the state examination without prior training and without attending a nurse aide program.

I am curious to when and where I can take the CNA test?
If you are currently enrolled or plan to enroll in a CNA training class, then your course instructor will help you contact the testing agency to schedule a date for the exam. This is one of the responsibilities of any CNA course instructor, regardless of the facility providing the program. Some states have designated companies which administer the exam and evaluate the results, such as Pearson Vue. There are different locations you can select to challenge the exam. You are the one who determines the date of the exam as long as the test center is available on that particular date. As a nursing assistant program graduate you may contact the testing center and schedule an exam date at a convenient location and time. If you have not received help from you instructor, my advice is to call the school or facility who provided your training and politely ask them for assistance and the test center's contact information. If you can't get the information that way, you can contact the Nurse Aide Registry for your state and they should provide all the info you need.

What is a Nursing Assistant?

A CNA is an entry level, certified healthcare worker. To obtain CNA certification, a nursing assistant trainee must complete a series of courses which teach the student basic skills needed to assist with patient care. A nurse aide is knowledgeable about client safety and transportation, assisting with activities of daily living, communicating with clients and nursing staff, performing basic procedures such as taking vital signs and weighing, and recording intake and output. A certified nursing assistant spends the majority of their working time at the patient's bedside, providing comfort, hygiene, and support.

State approved CNA training programs teach nurse aide trainees how to become competent care givers. The theoretical section of a nursing assistant program is augmented by the clinical portion, by reinforcing and practicing the knowledge gained in the classroom. The length of a nurse aide course depends on the facility providing the training. Some programs may require as little as three weeks to complete, while others may take two to three months. Fast paced courses are not for everyone, and students have the option to enroll in lengthier programs such as those offered by community colleges. A nurse aide trainee who completes the training is eligible to take the CNA exam. Passing this important examination results in certification and listing on the state nurse aide registry.

Employment opportunities for certified nursing assistants are numerous. The skills of a CNA are needed especially in hospitals, long term care facilities, and rehabilitation centers. Other nursing assistant job opportunities exist in the community, such as Home Health Aide. Hospitals may offer educational opportunities and financial incentives to nursing assistants who wish to continue their education and become licensed vocational nurses, or registered nurses.
