Message: I have let my Texas CNA certification expire. I had it for around 15 years. I haven't renewed it in maybe three years. How can I reinstate the license?

Message: As you already know, CNAs must renew their certification every two years in order to maintain active status on the Texas nurse aide registry. A nursing assistant with an expired certification may re-take the Texas CNA exam in order to become re-certified. You must first complete the request to retest form, and obtain a mandatory criminal background check. Once the Texas registry receives your completed application and the background check results, they process your request. It takes approximately ten business days for processing this type of application. You will then be allowed to schedule and challenge the CNA exam to obtain your certification. Nursing assistant programs vary in length depending on the school or facility offering the training. CNA courses may take anywhere between three to twelve weeks. Once you complete the training you may schedule the nurse aide competency test right away. Candidates who pass the examination become state certified right away and receive the actual certificate in a couple of weeks, usually within one month.
