Nurse Aide Training Programs in Virginia

Are you thinking about pursuing a career in the healthcare field? One of the quickest and less expensive ways to get started in the health industry is by completing a certified nursing assistant training program. Some people are more inclined to choose a career path when they know there are future opportunities for professional and individual growth in their chosen field. Only a few states offer a career ladder for those interested in becoming certified nursing assistants. Virginia State Board of Nursing, which oversees nurse aide training classes and the practice of certified nurse assistants, has designed an advanced CNA training program for the nurse aide interested in improving her career.

Individuals interested in earning the credentials associated with the title of Advanced Certified Nurse Aide must meet certain qualification criteria. To enroll in an advanced CNA class you must have been certified as a nurse aide for the last three years, hold an active certification as a CNA in Virginia, and be recommended for the advanced CNA course by a licensed practical nurse or a registered nurse who has been your supervisor. Once all the criteria have been met, you are eligible to enroll in an advanced CNA training program in Virginia. Before you decide on a particular training class offered by a vocational or technical institution, private school, or nursing facility, you should inform yourself about the requirements, educational cost, and program length associated with each facility.

Message: I have been told that some states have certain amounts of money set aside (like a grant) to offer as financial assistance to certain individuals. Do you know if this is true and how to go about finding the information for it? Thank you!!

Message: States do have grant programs for nursing assistant students in need of financial aid, but it is difficult to find these programs by yourself. The best advice I can give you is to stop by a local community college and speak with a financial aid counselor. These are usually trained professionals who know about your state's specific assistance programs, and who can help you apply for any available grant opportunities.

How do I sign up for CNA training? I am having trouble finding the shortest training program in my area. Can you help me?

To sign up for a certified nursing assistant program, you must contact the school and request an enrollment application. Some schools provide applications online, but others do not. You might have to visit the facility to pick up an application. A deposit is usually required to reserve your seat in the class. You must contact each program yourself to ask about the length and cost of their classes and decide which one is best for you. I could help you locate several CNA training classes in your area. Please provide me with state and county information if you need help locating nursing assistant courses close to where you live.

How long does it take to get the CNA certificate itself while in school taking courses?

Can you share any tips or advice regarding CNA job interviews?

I am trying to get some info on where to start in the health care profession. Is it better to start as a CNA or LVN?

I am a pre-nursing student. Is it true that becoming a CNA and getting the experience, really helps you with clinicals in nursing school?

How can I tell if my CNA certificate is active? If it is not active how do I go about renewing it?

CNA Training Requirements

There is a wide disparity between CNA training requirements among the states. The difference lies in the mandatory number of total training hours necessary to complete state-approved CNA classes.

While according to federal law each nursing assistant course should contain a minimum of seventy-five (75) instruction and clinical hours, individual states have the liberty to mandate extra training requirements for certified nursing assistants. The majority of states exceed the threshold federal minimum requirements for nurse aide training programs because they are considered insufficient to result in an optimal and safe level of care for clients.

A review of nationwide state requirements for nurse assistant courses has found that the following states have mandated highest number of CNA program hours: Maine with a minimum of 90 hours of theory, 20 hours of laboratory skills and 70 hours of clinical instruction for a total of 180 hours; California with one hundred and sixty (160) training hours; Delaware and Oregon each requiring one hundred and fifty (150) hours; followed by the state of Alaska with one hundred and forty (140) hours; Virginia, Arizona, and West Virginia have a minimum of one hundred and twenty (120) training hours for state-approved classes.
