Nurse Aide Training Programs in Florida

You may have heard that there are ways in which you can start working as a CNA in Florida even though you are not yet certified as a nurse aide in this state. Who exactly qualifies to work under these circumstances? Three different scenarios exist under which an individual is allowed to be employed as a certified nursing assistant in Florida for no longer than four months (one hundred and twenty days). The first category consists of students who are enrolled in a nurse aide training program in Florida or who have already graduated from a state-approved CNA class but do not yet hold certification.

The second way to qualify is when you hold a nurse aide certification in another state and are waiting for approval of certificate reciprocity in Florida. and finally, those who have passed the Florida nurse aide exam but are waiting to receive their certificate in the mail are also eligible to work as a certified nursing assistant for a maximum of four months before they present their credentials to the employer. All those qualified to work as a nurse aide in Florida must keep their information updated on the Florida CNA registry. Updating information includes things as changing one's name or changing one's address.

Nursing assistant programs prepare individuals for challenging the nurse aide certification exam and for entry level positions in health care environments. Each state has the authority to decide how many hours of training a nursing assistant course must consist of, as long as the minimum federal requirement of seventy-five hours is met. Students interested in attending CNA classes have a wide array of choices when it comes to selecting a training facility.

Nursing assistant courses are conducted at nursing homes, vocational schools, private schools, and community colleges. Program length, admission requirements, and cost of training vary depending on the policies of every training facility. Several states have implemented legislation which requires licensed long-term care facilities to reimburse CNA employees for the costs associated with training. An individual who has paid for nursing assistant training classes and who becomes employed by a nursing home within a year of obtaining certification, is eligible for financial reimbursement. Compared to other training programs in the health care field, nursing assistant classes are relatively short and inexpensive. Obtaining state certification as a CNA is the main requirement for securing a nurse aide job at a nursing home, hospital, rehabilitation or skilled nursing facility.

I am a CNA and I work in Tallahassee, Florida. I have been a CNA for about two years. I need to renew my CNA certification for Georgia, which has expired. Please help, I am trying to get a job in Georgia. What should I do?

A certified nursing assistant in Georgia must renew her certification every two years. To renew your certification you need to fill out and submit a renewal application. The CNA renewal application verifies that you provided a minimum of eight (8) hours of nurse aide related services for pay in the two years since your last renewal. I am not sure if the state of Georgia considers your work as a CNA in Florida acceptable for renewal of your certification. You need to call the Georgia nurse aide registry and explain your situation. The registry may be contacted at (678) 527-3010 or (800) 414-4358. If your work as a CNA in another state counts toward recertification requirements in Georgia, then you may request a CNA renewal application, complete and submit the forms, and become re-certified in Georgia. On the other hand, if the registry does not count your employment in Florida as valid for renewal of your CNA certification in Georgia, then your only option to re-certify is by retaking the Georgia nurse aide competency examination.
