CNA Training Programs in California

What health screening requirements are necessary prior to enrolling in a certified nursing assistant (CNA) training program in California? Any applicant interested in attending a nurse aide training course in California needs to begin by having a physical examination performed by a qualified health care professional. The results of this examination need to show that the person does not suffer from any physical condition which can be hazardous to other people, or that will prevent the person from performing nurse aide duties.

An important part of this report is having a negative result on the tuberculosis skin test. Those who meet the mandatory physical exam's health requirements are allowed to attend a nursing assistant training program and become certified nurse aides. The fees associated with health screenings and mandatory immunizations are usually the responsibility of a CNA student. In some cases the facility who provides the training will cover not only your nurse aide training but also costs associated with physical screenings. All those interested in free nurse aide training in California should ask course providers if they cover the program-associated medical costs.

CNA Training Programs in Los Angeles County, California

Nursing assistant programs prepare individuals for challenging the nurse aide certification exam and for entry level positions in health care environments. Each state has the authority to decide how many hours of training a nursing assistant course must consist of, as long as the minimum federal requirement of seventy-five hours is met. Students interested in attending CNA classes have a wide array of choices when it comes to selecting a training facility.

Nursing assistant courses are conducted at nursing homes, vocational schools, private schools, and community colleges. Program length, admission requirements, and cost of training vary depending on the policies of every training facility. Several states have implemented legislation which requires licensed long-term care facilities to reimburse CNA employees for the costs associated with training. An individual who has paid for nursing assistant training classes and who becomes employed by a nursing home within a year of obtaining certification, is eligible for financial reimbursement. Compared to other training programs in the health care field, nursing assistant classes are relatively short and inexpensive. Obtaining state certification as a CNA is the main requirement for securing a nurse aide job at a nursing home, hospital, rehabilitation or skilled nursing facility.

Why is it so hard to find a job as a CNA if there is such a high demand for them? I challenged the state test back in April of 2011 and I received my CNA license along with my CPR, basic first aid and BLS certificates and everywhere that I apply they are asking for at least one year of experience in the field and I don't qualify, so what do I do next? I think that I have covered just about every nursing home and hospital in my area and everyone is asking for experience. I have even offered to volunteer and they would not accept it. I am starting to get discouraged.

I understand why you might feel discouraged after searching for an open position at all those facilities and not finding one. Unemployment is high in all areas due to the the difficult economic times that we are all experiencing right now, and as a result employers have many applicants for open positions and can afford to demand previous work experience. I want to encourage you to keep trying to find a CNA job, and to use all the possible resources to locate one in your area. Local newspapers and online job search engines can be a good start. Some of the online listings I looked at did not require experience, but only certification as a CNA. My advice is to keep checking daily, as new jobs are being posted and to not give up. Good luck!

What are the requirements for online CNA classes?

My girlfriend is already a caregiver who has worked at a facility for over two years, is it possible for her to take the test instead of enrolling in a CNA class or must she enroll beforehand?

Is there an example of the CNA test online I can take?

Could you give some examples of questions I might be asked at a CNA job interview?

Can I join a CNA training course as a J-2 visa holder? Am I allowed to work as a certified nursing assistant after I finish the training and pass the certification exam?

CNA Training Requirements

There is a wide disparity between CNA training requirements among the states. The difference lies in the mandatory number of total training hours necessary to complete state-approved CNA classes.

While according to federal law each nursing assistant course should contain a minimum of seventy-five (75) instruction and clinical hours, individual states have the liberty to mandate extra training requirements for certified nursing assistants. The majority of states exceed the threshold federal minimum requirements for nurse aide training programs because they are considered insufficient to result in an optimal and safe level of care for clients.

A review of nationwide state requirements for nurse assistant courses has found that the following states have mandated highest number of CNA program hours: Maine with a minimum of 90 hours of theory, 20 hours of laboratory skills and 70 hours of clinical instruction for a total of 180 hours; California with one hundred and sixty (160) training hours; Delaware and Oregon each requiring one hundred and fifty (150) hours; followed by the state of Alaska with one hundred and forty (140) hours; Virginia, Arizona, and West Virginia have a minimum of one hundred and twenty (120) training hours for state-approved classes.
