A registered nurse (RN) or a licensed practical nurse (LPN) with a current and active Illinois license qualifies to work as a certified nursing assistant without being on the Illinois nurse aide registry. Inactive nurses and nurses licensed in another state do not qualify to work as nursing assistants. These individuals must first reactivate their status or transfer their nursing license to Illinois.
