Nursing students enrolled in an LPN or RN program, who have not completed all their training, may work as nursing assistants only after they pass the CNA certification exam. A nursing student needs to apply to be an Illinois nurse aide while continuing to go to school. To register for the competency exam, the student must provide written verification of successfully completing the fundamentals of nursing coursework and forty hours of supervised clinical experience in a state accredited nurse training program.
