A geriatric nursing assistant certification can be obtained by completing an approved geriatric nurse aide course and passing the geriatric competency examination. To become a GNA you must already have a basic nurse aide certification or complete both certifications simultaneously. The geriatric nurse aide credential will be displayed on the CNA certification card. To renew a geriatric nurse aide certification you need to work at least eight hours, for pay, in a comprehensive care facility, within the two years preceding the certification expiration date.
