A CNA certificate is typically valid for two years. To maintain an active status, most states require renewal every two years. If you have the actual certificate then look for a printed expiration date. If you do not have the certificate then go to the CNA registry page for your state and check your status online. The registry requires you to enter personal information such as name and date of birth in order to display your nurse aide status. In some states you may also access this information by phone.

If your nursing assistant certification has expired then you most likely have to retake and pass the CNA exam. Some states require retraining and retesting for CNAs with a lapsed certification. Federal regulations state that an individual must work at least eight hours, for pay, in the provision of nursing services without a two year break to remain active on the registry. Please note that renewal requirements may differ from state to state and may change over time. Some states make a distinction between inactive and expired CNA licenses. Locate the contact information for the CNA registry of your state and contact them for up-to-date and accurate information regarding these requirements.
